The proceedings of Spanish Audiovisual Councils on discriminatory discourse

Mass media, and especially television, are powerful discursive instruments, responsible for the construction of social imagery through ideologically determined content. For this reason, creation a regulatory body with authority over audiovisual sector in countries without one was urged by Committee Ministers Council Europe 2000. Spain is only EU country an council at state level. Currently, Audiovisual Catalonia (CAC), created 2000, Andalusia (CAA), which dates from 2004, operate Spain. Within environment increasingly marked hate speech, research analyzes proceedings Andalusian Catalan Councils between 2004 2019 as it pertains to discrimination against vulnerable groups. Every pronouncement made both councils on potentially discriminatory discourses retrieved (n=156). These were content analyzed codifying, among others, following variables: type action, source that motivated it, disseminating media outlet, evaluated content, alleged, decision taken, sanction imposed councils, case may be. The results indicate most actions concerned involve women, originate third-party complaints target broadcast public television.
